Animal Assisted Therapy: Belle
Belle is a 10 year old Yorkshire Terrier. She is a therapy dog, which means she is trained to sense the emotional state of the client and is able to give her attention to keep the patient calm and focussed on the task at hand.
She has been working with me since I adopted her in October 2010. We have teamed up and she is my full time co-therapist.
Belle is highly sensitive to the different states of mind of people and reacts accordingly to what she senses. She develops a unique relationship with each client, being a source of unconditional love in the room.
She is wonderful both with children and adults. She loves being a working dog and having a career!

Research shows that a few minutes of stroking a pet dog decreases cortisol, the stress hormone, in both the human and the dog. It also increases prolactin and oxytocin, hormones that govern nurturing and security, as well as serotonin and norepinephrine, neurotransmitters that boost mood. One study found that five minutes with a dog was as relaxing as a 20-minute break for hospital staffers.
